Difference between Its and It’s

Often confusing students is the difference between its and it’s. Well, it’s very easy.

Its

It is a possessive pronoun which is used to show possession of non-living things or gender neutral things.

  • The girl has hurt her leg.
  • The boy has hurt his leg.
  • My dog has hurt its leg.
  • The child has dropped its milk*

*When the gender of a child is not mentioned, it takes pronoun it.

It’s

It is a contraction or short form for It+is or It+has. 

Just like

can’t =  can+not

we’ve = we+have

I’d = I+had

similarly,

It’s = It+is/ It+has.

  • It’s a beautiful day = It is a beautiful day.
  • It’s too far to walk = It is too far to walk.
  • It’s a house = It is a house.
  • It’s four legs= It has four legs.
